Biography

Dr. Wates graduated from Strom Thurmond High School in 1971. He then attended Clemson University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Education.  In 1990, he earned a Doctorate in Vocational and Technical Education from Clemson University.

Dr. Wates began his teaching career at Barnwell County Area Vocational Center teaching Agricultural Mechanics from August 1976 until May 1977.   He returned to Strom Thurmond to teach Career Introduction at Strom Thurmond High School from August 1977 until May 1980. At that time he was promoted to the principal’s position at Johnston Elementary School where he served from August 1980 until May 1984. In August of 1984, he returned to Strom Thurmond to be the director of Strom Thurmond Career Center where he served until he retired in 2009.

Vision

Dr. Wates’ vision as a board member is to be able to assist in facilitating the opportunity for each student enrolled in Edgefield County School District to reach his or her educational potential so that he or she will be ready to enter the workforce or attend a post-secondary program.
