Bullying Continued

During the 2019-2020 school year, both Merriwether Elementary and Merriwether Middle will hold kick-off assemblies in October to introduce the OLWEUS program. Students at both schools will complete the OLWEUS student questionnaire at the beginning of October so that the Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committees at each school have an idea of what students experience in regards to bullying and can better develop a plan of how to best address student needs and concerns. Both Merriwether schools are excited about the start of the OLWEUS program. Karson Guess, the BPCC Coordinator at MMS said “at the beginning of the year, the entire MMS staff went through OLWEUS training. It was great to see our faculty working together to develop a plan that will end bullying at MMS and will positively affect our school’s climate. We are excitedly awaiting the student kick off pep rally on October 17th. This will be a time for students to have fun, while learning what the OLWEUS program is all about.”

Throughout the school year, students at both schools will hold weekly and/or bi-weekly OLWEUS classroom meetings. These meetings are designed to foster better peer relationships with a trusted adult in the school. The OLWEUS program depends on the successful implementation of the program’s core components which include the individual student, parents, school, community and classroom. School-wide bullying prevention guidelines will also be implemented at each school. The OLWEUS recommended guidelines are:

Guideline 1: We will not bully others.

Guideline 2: We will try to help students who are bullied.

Guideline 3: We will try to include students who are left out.

Guideline 4: If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
