Bond Continued

The entire project is projected to be completed within two to three years. “The contractors had to have blueprints before starting a project of this magnitude. All projects are on time and within the overall budget at this point,” explained Dr. Kevin O’Gorman, Superintendent.

The bond provides for security upgrades and expansions at Merriwether Elementary School, Merriwether Middle School, and Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center and new construction of an auditorium, gymnasium, and practice track at Strom Thurmond High School. “After looking at the cost involved in the practice tract, we made the decision to delay its construction until other projects started. That saved the district funding because the construction supervisors would already be on site,” said James Courtney, Director of Facilities. In addition, Douglas Elementary School, Johnston Elementary School, W.E. Parker Elementary School, JET Middle School, and Strom Thurmond High School are getting security upgrades and renovations. “We want the public to know the renovations and construction are being done in phases. While they may not see ground breaking at this point, it is panned and will happen according to planned phases schedule,” added Courtney.

“The district received a great percentage rate on the bonds we sold,” said Fallaw. The district received a lower than expected interest rate due to the districts and the school board’s fiscal management in the past several years.
