 ECSD’s Human Resources team were able to fill the district’s positions because of planning and effective strategies. “When we go to job fairs there are other district’s offering candidates contracts on the spot. Their contracts read, position to be determined. Our team, which consist of building level administrators, have conversations with applicants and invite them to come visit the school where they will teach,” said Fallaw.

When prospective teachers visit the school, they are encouraged to talk to teachers on the school’s staff, students, and the administrator. “Once we get applicants in a school, they see immediately that ECSD has a great culture and great students,” said Kevin Butler, Johnston Elementary School Assistant Principal and recruitment team member.  “I give applicants and new hires my direct line. Larger districts can’t be that personable,” added Fallaw.

During the past two years ECSD’s salaries have become competitive statewide. While there are districts that can afford to pay more, ECSD has a climate and culture larger districts cannot replicate. The Human Resources team attends job fairs and visits colleges throughout the year. “It’s all about continuing relationships when we are recruiting. If we wait till June to start filling positions we will have classrooms without teachers,” noted Fallaw.

ECSD places a tremendous effort in retaining teachers. New teachers are assigned a mentor and participate in a yearlong induction process. “The induction process provides new teachers all the information they need about how ECSD operates and supports them in that first and critical year,” said Jerrilyn Harmon, Director of Exceptional Children and leader of the district’s induction program. New teachers receive staff development points for recertification for participating in the district’s induction program.
