Sixteen students chosen as the 2019 Junior Scholars were recognized at the Edgefield County School Board meeting on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. The South Carolina Junior Scholars Program was developed in the South Carolina Department of Education to identify eighth grade students with exceptional academic talent.

Students, parents, and relatives filled the board room.  Superintendent Dr. Kevin O’Gorman congratulated the students and explained the criteria for eligibility.  The criteria includes meeting the required eligibility score on the PSAT/NMSQT or the requirements of Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (TIP). The purpose of the Junior Scholars program is to identify and provide opportunities that will facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their interests, and promote scholastic achievement.

Congratulations were extended to the following 8th grade students from the Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School and Merriwether Middle School:
